Star Nebula Corsairs Squall Spotlight

Updated: Aug 5

I’ve never known that woman’s real name, but we call her Squall. An infamous renegade Doctrine mage bent only on expanding her own power and amassing wealth and comfort. A pure mercenary pirate who has plied her trade across every sector of wildspace from one galacticrim to the other. She is temperamental and unpredictable when wielding her power in anger. Like the elements she conjures, she flashes and crackles, and you’d do best to stay out of her way. She is a force of nature that sweeps everything before her in arcs of lightning and sizzling electronics. This is what Calico Kate wants, and Squall is only too happy to accommodate.

Squall joins the Star Nebula Corsairs lineup with an updated sculpt, ready to weave esper to support her allies.

Chain Lightning is Squall’s first ability and her main attack. Chain Lightning doesn’t boast high damage, but with a press for piercing, it can chip away at enemy HP. The second press allows Squall to take the action again against another target in line of sight of the first target if it does damage. With a good hand and/or a little bit of luck, this attack could hit every enemy unit on the field. Chain Lighting has a better chance of doing damage to each subsequent target, as most players don’t worry about positioning their units to have cover against friendly models. But it can be a gamble to pay for the press, as you can’t guarantee that the damage won’t be stopped. Eye of the Storm is a great utility action in Squall’s arsenal. Not only does it Compel the target 4, it can be pressed to add 4 damage. Its real strength lies in the special effect: every other unit, including allies, will be compelled 4 if they don’t discard a card. Squall can reposition her allies or just leave them in place, while forcing her enemies to make a choice between losing cards or being scattered by the winds.

Nebula isn’t as flashy as Squall’s other two actions, but it is an equally strong piece of her kit. Being able to conjure a zone that blocks line of sight at will should come in handy in all sorts of situations. And as it’s a surge action, Squall can place the area of effect whenever it’s needed. If it’s pressed, Nebula has the chance to damage any unit, including allies, that move through the area. Squall is a versatile support unit, fitting right in with the Start Nebula Corsairs Battle Box. Eye of the Storm’s potential to cause your opponent to discard fits well with the units that have Precision, and Captain Harker’s Calamity Insight combos really nicely with Chain Lighting. Likewise, Squall fits really well in a Void cadre led by Tahariel, as Void cadres also synergize with hand destruction.

Up next, we're expecting a visit from a time hopping lass. Subscribe to make sure you don't miss the next model preview!
